"Around the World in a Summer" (ATWAS) Summer Camp

One Village Alliance incorporates cultural diversity and enrichment fun with evidence based curricula to take youth participants on an educational journey "Around the World in a Summer!" (ATWAS). The goal is to engage youth with the highest risk for negative life outcomes that result from the "summer learning slide" while providing a year-round safe haven and rich experiences of world travel to which they may otherwise not be afforded.

This camp is not subsidized based on income qualifications. Our alliance of partners is committed to ALL families for whom a rich, summer camp experience may not be affordable. Students are accepted on a first come basis depending on a demonstrated commitment which begins with required participation of participant and guardian in an orientation prior to program start.

ATWAS provides a mix of literacy instruction and enrichment activities that guide youth (age 6-13) on an exhilarating journey to explore world cultures through:

  • Literature

  • Math, Money and Numbers

  • Arts & Crafts

  • Music & Movement and

  • Culinary Arts

Through this fun journey, we address the summer learning loss that contributes to the achievement gap between children from economically disadvantaged communities and wealthier, more advantaged youth with greater access to learning supports. With curriculum developed by OVA's own, Dr. Heather Townsend and enhanced with evidence-based literacy interventions, ATWAS is designed to improve reading proficiency and foster a love of learning that lasts year round!
